The state of California mandates a certain percentage of the electric power must be zero net carbon (or renewable.)

 

Sooner or later, somebody is going to ask the obvious: is not alcohol production from corn carbon neutral?  Answer: no.  It is carbon negative.  Corn draws carbon dioxide down.  After the corn is fermented, there is plenty of biomass left over.  

 

Since a new crop is planted every year, that is even renewable..  The alcohol can be used to run the farm machinery, even run turbine engines on it.  The process isn’t efficient of course, but hey, it’s carbon neutral or better, so it can qualify for taxpayer subsidy, regardless of the absurdity of it all.
