For those who, like myself, can't access these articles (nytimes.com 
refuses to work with some combination of ad-blockers, scripting control 
and cookie control, I'm not going to spend the time required to find out 
exactly what), there's a wikipedia article that explains what happened:

I find this encouraging. It means that there are people, even in the 
higher ranks of the CCP, that have a conscience, and some of them are 
willing to act on it.
