In all that discussion, I don’t remember anyone predicting that when it becomes clear the singularity really is happening, no one, not even those who have been discussing AI for decades, will know how to control it.

 

The closest I can think of is a series of posts from Eliezer on Less Wrong where he seemed to go into a deep depression.  The phrase I recall from him is “I have cried my last tear for humanity.”  He seemed to be resigned to our being unable to stop AI-based destruction.

Jason I was in San Francisco with Anders Sandberg a coupla weeks ago.  I had read about robo-taxis, but I hadn’t realized how many of them there are.  In San Francisco where we were, they had jillions of those robo-taxis whirring about.  They solved the problem of privacy: the back windows were blacked out.  We know what they were doing back there of course, but no free porno shows.
