We have those now.  They did take a long time, but eventually they happened.  I was in San Francisco last April.  I was surprised at how many driverless taxis and by how fast they go: damn fast.  I noticed a Waymo test car at the San Jose Airport yesterday.

 

I get it with air traffic control: the humans do a good job so there is no pressure, until an extended  government shutdown sends them home.  This week we will see some big consequences with flight delays and canellations.  It might result in the elimination of the senate filibuster, in order to let the majority reopen US government over the objection of the minority.
