"Man" used to be seen as simply an abbreviated from of human or mankind. It
would be a lot simpler (and more unifying) if we returned to that.

That also has the benefit of emphasizeling our commonality as part of
mankind and humanity, rather than reflecting and focusing attention on our
(comparatively minor) differences.
