 By the 1490s, they had good navigation equipment and could measure down to sub-degrees accurately.  A good sailor knew he needed to sail all day north or south to go one degree.  Columbus likely figured it was a risk, but that's what people did back in those days: take chances for fame and fortune.  The alternative was go to war, which was pointless.  Sailing into the unknown  has its advantages: you don't know what is on the other side of that big sea.  Given those circumstances you and I might do the same.
