And StarLink! How could I forget that one? It has helped solve part of the homelessness problem in the area. Reasoning: many young professionals in the San Jose area make pretty good money, enough to afford an apartment, 100 to 140 range starting out of a bachelor’s degree in engineering or other STEM degree. But apartments are crazy expensive, typically 3k a month.

Typically companies have a gym, a shower facility, lockers, a 24 hour cafeteria. The kinds of go-go get-r-dun company you would want to work for out of college has all that. In one’s first year or three, one is practically living at the office anyway, finding one’s place in the company, kind of analogous to how medical school graduates would spend a coupla years as an intern. Tech companies have young ambitious techies as the equivalent of medical interns.

OK so if one is single and ambitious, one is practically living in the office anyway, so why pay all that money for an apartment? All ya really need at “home” is a bed, a toilet and good high speed internet. Camper vans have the former two, and StarLink allows good high speed internet. So a young single tech hipster can get a camper van for the cost of a year or two of apartment rent, live in that, keep one’s business clothing in a locker at the office, shower there, work out there, eat there, socialize there, go “home” only to sleep and surf the internet. Park in a different place every coupla days. No rent cost, no utilities, save a buttload of money.

I personally know an example of a young professional who bought a used van and is converting it to do stealth camping. She is looking forward to moving into it. I am helping design the stuff to go in it. StarLink enabled the internet connection, which enabled stealth camping for young professionals, which helps ease the housing shortage.
