It took a while, but eventually somehow they worked out the liability
challenges.
I saw a lot of self-drivers in San Francisco four months ago. Last Friday I
saw one at the San Jose airport.
This morning I saw this one in Palo Alto at the medical center.
The local newspaper reports that Waymo now is expanding into San Jose and
surrounding areas.
I was at the first DARPA challenge, where self-driving cars went on a desert
course. It took 20 years to get to where self-drivers can navigate the
surface streets. It eventually happened, but dang that took a long time.
This might be a better investment opportunity than power infrastructure.
All the stuff we wrote about here twenty years ago is now unfolding. It
will enable proles to not own cars: a network of Waymos will stay parked all
over the place and form a far more practical transportation network than
anything we have had before. They will be like taxis, but when they deliver
the fare, they just stop and stay there until they are called to the next
fare.
This will help solve homelessness. Reason: if many people choose to not own
cars, it frees up a lot of garage space which can be converted to
apartments. It will require a lot of capital to buy enough Waymo cars so
that they can distribute themselves along the streets at a spacing of about
100 meters. Meanwhile, former car owners can save on insurance,
maintenance, etc, while freeing up valuable garage space, which is an income
source.
