UBI is a great idea, if implemented correctly: at the state level and local level.  The US government has already run out of other people’s money and is now having to borrow other people’s money like crazy to cover the retirement fund (other people’s money) it borrowed and spent in the 1990s.  By the time that fund is paid off in about 9 years, the US government will be little more than a debt slave, powerless, few employees, most of whom are engaged in collecting tax money to pay interest on federal treasury bills.

 

But there are plenty of states which can still do a UBI, and within those states which cannot carry that load effectively are cities which can do that.  I live in a city which has a version of UBI: our local food bank is well stocked and sustained by volunteers.  It has been providing a food equivalent of a basic unconditional income to those for whom that is a meaningful need for decades.  That works.
