There are two different sorts of "rights" being discussed here.

One is a philosophical notion, that one may claim to be entitled to
even if no one else recognizes them.

The other applies to how one can realistically expect to be treated by
those in power.

A lot of people are far more concerned about the latter than the
former.  Injecting the former meaning into discussions about the
latter is generally not productive.
