That's not what John said.  He didn't say that we can't get there, just that we're not there yet.

OK cool, no worries.  

There is big money to be made in finding alternatives until we can get that whole thing going.  Example: finding enough dysprosium for computer chips should be easy: it doesn't take much.  Designing an electric motor or generator with replaceable permanent magnets would allow us to use the non-RE motors until we get the RE extraction facility running, then swap out the magnets for the more-advanced RE magnets.
