Agreed, but how thick do we not want it?  

If we imagine a ring of nodes, the second ring is nearly free (and beneficial to both rings.)  A third one is also almost free, and mutually beneficial to the other two and itself.

Repeat until... how many?  Can we just keep adding rings until the inboard guys start to notice how warm it is?
