Ben I agree with Reagan: all tariffs are bad.  The goal is to eliminate all tariffs on everything, every import, every crop, every manufactured anything.  Where I fear the USA is now is that catastrophe cannot be averted using income tax alone, but that we can’t get out of the debt spiral using tariffs either.
 
In any case, France may soon show us the way, regarding unsustainable national debt.  If we opine that that the US government is too big to fail, then we look to some smaller government (such as France) to see if it too is too big to fail.  Repeat until we find a government small enough to fail.  Then we will know for sure.  But in the meantime… I suspect the US government is not too big to fail.
