Some years ago, I was on holiday on the island of Ibiza (Spain).
One afternoon, I decided to wander up into the nearby pine forest.
Very quiet and peaceful, until I heard a faint droning noise, like a
turbine engine running. The noise became louder as I approached to
investigate who might have an engine running in the forest.
Then I noticed the insects, streaming to and from a large nest.
They were bigger than bees and noisier.
I had never seen anything like that in the UK. I assumed them to be
hornets and retreated much faster than I had approached!
Some things you just don't inspect closely.
