One of the AIs I use a lot is GrokAI.  It is good about sourcing.  I asked it something I know enough about to see if it is crazy: what would be the result of the Falcon 9 booster impact with the moon?  

 

I gave it this question because some “news” agencies imagined the booster left poking out of the lunar surface like a lawn dart.  But I already know the moon doesn’t know the difference between a booster and any other incoming meteor: it will still leave a broad shallow round crater.

 

I notice GrokAI references the Beeb a lot.  The British lads tend to be level-headed about this kind of stuff, not getting tangled up in Elon-hate for instance, or too worried about polluting the moon with our space junk.

Most of the Falcon 9 upper stage was destroyed on impact, leaving primarily a new crater and a blanket of mixed lunar ejecta (with any remaining rocket fragments incorporated into it).

The ~4,000 kg (roughly 8,800 lb), mostly hollow metal stage (about 13.8 m / 45 ft long) hit near Einstein Crater at ~2.43 km/s (~5,400 mph) on August 5, 2026. No large, intact sections of the booster are reported as remaining. The Moon’s lack of atmosphere or weather means the crater and ejecta will persist for a very long time. Higher-resolution images from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (and further analysis of Danuri data) are expected to provide more precise details on the crater morphology and any distinct debris distribution in the coming weeks.
