Ilsa instead of guys on a ship or sub, picture a single person with every digital and audio stimulation imaginable, every Hollywood product ever made, every interesting physics documentary, every book, every porno film, the ultimate audio/video library.  Now imagine communications with the home planet, delayed by a few minutes, but you can reach every old friend, every family member, everyone in your former life, all of whom know you are out there and will respond, even if it is just a cheerful word of encouragement.  The Mars-bound astronaut would have it way better than a submarine crewman, a point I made in an engineering pitch 30 years ago.  However… that still doesn’t solve the cargo capacity problem.
