Jason I have long suspected that Satoshi is a composite character or collective pseudonym which likely included our own Hal Finney.  In that Mersenne group which split off from here, existing from about 1999 to 2003, we discussed Dr. Irving Matrix and Nicolas Bourbaki, treating them as real people, even though they are composites.  Although I only met Hal face to face once, he was a very special person, an extremely rare combination of smart and kindhearted.
