Given that a bee's ability to communicate specific locations is fairly
rigid and not extendable to communicating about arbitrary objects, I
wouldn't consider bee language as strong evidence of abstract thinking.
That said, the minds of bees (and wasps) are among the most advanced of all
insects. Bees remember visual landmarks for navigation, engage in play, and
seek out plants containing nicotine or caffeine to self-medicate when sick.
Wasps can recognize and distinguish human faces and remember them for at
least a week. They even watch the outcomes of other wasps' fights to
logically infer their own potential to win a dominance fight based on their
past fight records.
I think animals are much more intelligent than we often give them credit
for. Even alligators have been observed to be "tool users"
