Ben it is the consequence of a defacto binary system that removing a POTUS becomes functionally impossible. If there were three parties, as in Britain, two can form a coalition to get rid of the guy from the third party. With a binary party system, each of the two parties becomes a coalition and both evolve to stay about the same size.

I have been seeing if anyone here will recognize why the party which lost the last time will lose again: it has become a coalition of incompatible elements. Adrian figured out half of it. The democrat party has two factions in particular which will never work together under any circumstances. One or the other faction must be cut loose. But both tend to vote in unison, which makes them valuable.
