The long term result is that a known vulnerability, the Strait of Hormuz, is having oil pipelines built around it as fast as the neighboring countries can throw them under the ground.  US and Canadian oil resources, once dormant, are being reactivated.  

 

Iran has some of the richest oil fields in the world.  They have an ambition to unify the entire Middle East, with Tehran in control of course, bringing their own religion and culture, which is incompatible with western values.  So… pinch off that strait, make it economically attractive to build alternative means of oil export (underground pipelines) for the countries on the west side of the gulf, develop domestic oil resources, let Iran eat its own damn oil.
