<BR><BR>Benedict made his comments during a meeting with members of the
Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the entity he headed for 24 years
whose origins go back to 1542, during the Inquisition. <BR><BR>For centuries the
Roman Catholic Church rejected scientific theories which it felt threatened its
view of the creation of the universe, and some defenders of science were branded
as heretics during the Inquisition.</DIV>
