Forgot to add. Some camcorders have the IEEE. Some USB. If you need help manipulating the files once you have them converted, let me know. I've been playing around with video editing for a few years. Making porn, you know. (Kidding.)

Hi John:

Do you have a mac? One-step DVD in iDVD which is standard on OSX imports the DV files to the hard drive, converts them and burns to a DVD with a single button click. All you need is an IEEE 1394 (firewire) cable. Once they're burned you can manipulate the videos in the iDVD editor or use any of the free software online to rip the DVD files and convert to other formats. If you're on a pc, programs like DVDsanta can also do it. There's a free version download here: (I have not used this version so I don't know its restriction/limitations.)

http://www.dv-to-dvd.com/

There are also a number of free software program that convert directly to flash. But you could end up buying one of these programs (they're not expensive) as often there's a size limitation for converting files on free versions of video conversion software. I hope this helps.

I have a science fiction con founder/organizer friend who has asked me
to transcribe a couple dozen con panel DV camcorder recordings onto a
computer. I am dumbfounded that he would ask me to volunteer for such
a task, but I do want to help him (he is not very tech savvy).

I would think we need to first convert the DV tapes into dvd or flash
format and then upload it into a computer, where the appropriate (and
hopefully not too expensive) software could first scan it and then do
a competent transcription.

Please help and point me in the right direction to get the task done!
And how much will it cost?

Thank you,

John
