This is officially known as the "Max max".<br><br>I wonder how the maximum heart rate was originally set? (I'm too lazy to Google it right now.) It seems to one of those inaccurate but occasionally useful measures like the BMI.<br>

The formulas are just for approximation. You should conduct a test like Max's to determine your actual max. And recheck it periodically. The rate is exercise-specific.
