For Libertarians, it is all about balancing the Federal budget, regardless of what it takes to do that. A strong showing by a third party influences the mainstream parties to listen and appeal to the third parties. So if you live in a free state, your vote cannot possibly influence the election, but if you vote third party it can influence whoever wins that election.
