It's called 'journalism'.<br>

And its purpose is to get people to spend time on the website in <br>
question, seeing adverts and generating click-revenue.<br>

As for the 'scary' conversations, this is just people pushing the system <br>
in certain directions with the intention of getting it to say <br>
sensationalist things that they can write an article about that will get <br>
people stirred up.<br>
