I learned much from the disappointing experience of my missionary friend, whose failed exercise took place when he was an idealistic young doctor at the time. As the years rolled by, he realized that indeed, if there is wealth available, the warring tribes and gangs will respond. It’s the African version of Field of Dreams: if we build it, they will come. That means lethal defense, but such a notion is inherently repugnant to the altruistic and idealistic young medical missionary. The locals were telling the truth: their most immediate and dire need really was rifles and ammo.
