class="moz-quote-pre">I offered that I was under the impression that the USA had solved the whole health insurance problem by setting up a system where poor people can get health insurance free. She agreed that such a system is in place, but hospitals are struggling now nearly as much now as they were before, because of all those people who are eligible to get free health insurance… most of them never do. They only need to sign up for this, sign that, go here, do that, and it’s MAGIC! The US government GIVES them free health insurance. But most penniless people don’t ever do it.

1) Because they don't need to, and 2) remove the parasites (the
health insurance companies) from the middle, put the money directly
into the hospitals.

As far as I'm aware, it's the usual story: Middlemen profiting from
setting up a layer that doesn't need to exist. American healthcare
is scandalously profitable, has nothing to do with the actual real
cost of health care and the profits don't go the the actual
providers of the healthcare.

I'm far from being an expert on american healthcare, but I don't see
why it doesn't suffer from the same problems as the music and
publishing industries. If there's money to be made without actually
contributing something positive to society, there will be some lower
form of life that will jump in and exploit that as much as they can.

The real question is what can be done about that.
