Is there any hard science out there about this? 

We know that we have an electromagnetic field,
and perhaps there are effects when the fields
of individuals merge in groups.

I'm also thinking about why we love events like
the Kentucky Derby, where the actual race only
lasts a few minutes, yet people flock to the buildup,
enjoy the climax (and the sexual connotation may
be totally appropriate :-)), and then wind down.
