This should be a season of good cheer,
but it cannot be.

We have little to celebrate,
and many to mourn.

Most of the world fears and hates us,
and is justified in doing so.

Everywhere we go,
innocents suffer and die
for our greed.

Do not raise the cup of wassail,
for it will be as bitter as hemlock.

Laughter will fade to reflection,
and hubris will go before shame.

The mirror will be our enemy.
