--There was an interesting article in the Atlantic
magazine called Thin Ice, about what they called
Stereotype Threat. They did some experiments, one in
which they told a group of white students, "Asians are
expected to do better on these tests". The scores of
the white students dropped. Apparently, perceptions
and expectations have a significant effect on test
scores, and when Bush talks about "the soft tyranny of
low expectations" he may be right. Groups that feel
especially pressured to counteract stereotypes about
their performance do poorly on tests, even if they do
very well in less pressured settings.
