My Webster's Seventh New Collegiate says:

believe [ME beleven, fr. OE belefen fr. be- + lyfan, lefan "to alllow",
"believe"; akin to OHG gilouben "to believe", OE leof "dear" - more at
"love"]

...which is certainly not what I expected! Sorta seems like it's turning
into "belove"! And that's for sure irrational.

I pretty much understand where you're coming from with the "I believe"
thing; I often have a similar reaction to "I feel". :)))

How about "opine"?
