Would you be creating a diminished, crippled human, or an empowered,
improved chimpanzee?

I'm not advocating this. I just thought I would put a little different
perspective on it. Maybe I shouldn;t have done that since this could turn
into a debate about consciousness, ethical behaviour, and the superiority of
man. From there we could go debate just how ethical it is to create a human
level AI or upload human minds that have no interface with their
environment. As it is, I have very little time I can devote to the study of
human evolution. Splitting the topic would take more of that time.

To remain focused on my current topic, I'll drop all references to
human/chimp hybrids for the time being and concentrate instead on
chimp/gorilla hybrids (although gorillas are less similar to chimps
genetically than humans). Despite the similarities between humans and chimps
and the fact that chimps are aware of themselves, the idea of chimp/gorilla
hybrids seems to be less distasteful to humans.
