This is a truly stunning error - John Paul II is 'ex labore solis' - 
from the labour of the *sun*, which I've always taken to be a reference 
to the fact that he was from eastern Europe, as 'the labour of the sun' 
would be a perfectly acceptable classical Latin metaphor for 'where the 
sun rises'.
