Sterling engines are indeed cool.  There have been models
that can go up to 3000 RPM (how the hell they do that is
beyond my imagination).  The problem isn't necessarily
the speed, its the torque.  Sterling engines haven't been
able to move very much heat, consequently they haven't
been able to make much power.  The real brilliance of
a Sterling cycle is that it can run on anything that
burns.
