My lay understanding is the third option above. The very 
*possibility* of decohering the superposed states causes the 
splitting. This is very strange, especially when it can be 
subsequently erased. (I think Cramer's story helps deal with this.) 
But what do you mean by "partially true"? Thin and unconvincing fringes? :)
