Hal -- I just wanted to highlight this part of your post. I like

Maybe we should get T-shirts printed that say:
"EVIDENCE-BASED LIVING--TRY IT!"

On smileys -- they do seem a bit goofy, but I agree they can help, in 
the absence of richer media for our communications.
