I think you mean they try to discredit Shakespeare's
name. I don't see anyone trying to discredit his
plays. 

I'd guess the true author cared little about his name.
After all it was this same person who wrote, "What's
in a name? That which we call a rose by any other word
would smell as sweet."

'tis perhaps another clue. :)
