They are required to have military assault rifles, the storage of both gun
and ammunition being very closely regulated. Handguns in Switzerland are
also relatively closely regulated. Despite this, Switzerland has the second
highest handgun ownership rate *and* the second highest handgun murder rate
in the industrialised world:

You will note the 1 - 2 orders of magnitude difference in the handgun murder
rate in most countries other than Switzerland compared to the United States.
