But isn't the point that if enough users having PV systems then it's not
cloudy everywhere at once so they compensate for each other.

And even now supposedly if generators in Western PA go out the power grids
in Ohio are supposed to kick in and provide the needed electricity to
compensate.

The batteries would still be necessary to provide night power of course and
I still think there would need to be big jump in solar cell efficiency in
order for people living in the snowbelt to generate sufficient energy in the
winter months.
