The latter is the case but I do see your point about the former (and so do
many other people!).   The Roman Catholics are another group which is
bothered by the Mormon practice of vicarious baptism for the dead.  And
their leadership has asked their members to withhold genealogical records
and vital statistics from Mormon family history researchers.
