Careful about lock-in. With Gmail, you can use your own
domain (if you can publish MX records) and use IMAP
to synchronize in multiple locations. If things go
awry, you can always revert your DNS change and move
over to a different provider, losing only very little
mail if any.

In practice you should invest into your own (V)server,
which you connect to via (Open)VPN, including ability
to route your entire traffic through it.

Your ISP is not your friend, and neither are free email
providers. Caveat emptor, free can be too expensive.
