"Of sorts" being the operative words. I am inclined to doubt that, besides a
certain degree of cultural conformism which in fact hindered on a number of
occasion his scientific boldness, he had any real ideological or emotional
investment in his "Church of England" denomination.

Let us say that he mostly made the moves, said the words, and was displeased
by disapproval in the circles of the good society.
