As already mentioned a number of times, I haven't the slightest
sympathy for monotheistic fundamentalism, islamic brand included, and
the Shah was perhaps not so bad as many Americans consider him to be
now.

Concerning the current situation in the country, however, let us limit
ourselves to say that it would seem pretty natural that the US may
support the Iranian forces that are at least slightly less
anti-american than others, exactly as the Iranian government would do.
But it seems far-fetched to claim that supporting illegal actions
brought by a (be it "enlightened") minority against the government in
place in order to reverse electoral results means "supporrting the
Iranian people in their struggle". This sounds a little too much as
Soviet-style doublethink.

Were things reversed, I have no doubt that the same violent protests
would be labelled as terrorism and treason in favour of a foreign
power.
