A mistaken choice is still a choice, no? Unlike you, though, I don't know why Google made its choice, why Microsoft made its choice, or what will happen in fifty years. But I do hope we're all around to find out. :)

'choice' ???
Looks to me that Google made a massive error of judgment concerning
the Chinese market. They saw a huge market and decided they wanted
some of that. But Google's business relies on freedom of advertising,
payments, -- capitalism, really. They assumed that China would quickly
change to accommodate their business plan. But China thinks long-term.
Microsoft is in China, but is prepared to wait fifty years. Google isn't.
