The two "parties" are really coalitions, and this is very obvious with
the Democrats, who are far more ideologically diverse. About 30% of
Dems are similar to Greens. Another 30%, the Blue Dog Democrats, are
very similar to Republicans and would be considered right wingers in
the rest of the West(opposed to abortion rights,
religious/creationist, pro death penalty and so on ). Any multi-party
system is likely to stabilize into roughly balanced coalitions.
