If one is writing about a discovery made by Einstein, namely the stimulated emission of radiation, it seems entirely appropriate to remind people that LASER is indeed an acronym so they can reflect on what the "SER" in it stands for. And if Merriam-Webster doesn't like it then  Merriam-Webster can lump it.
