Of course this will probably have changed by the time your son is 
seeking employment. 
Computers will be programming themselves by then.  ;) 
Re-reading Vinge's "Fast times at Fairmont High" might give some ideas of the benefit. Java may be the Regna 5 of programming languages, but learning how to learn a language is always useful.
