Here is something that may lie behind the Fermi question.

The solar system and the particular size of Earth may be the result of
a rare occurrence.

If the size of the Earth makes a critical difference in the life
getting started or evolving technophiles, then the future is unknown
rather than the silence indicating that technically inclined species
always end in ways where they leave no observable mark on the
universe.

So maybe we are the first.
