It also depends on the voting system. Changing that might be the best option.

For example, in the UK 2015 election, UKIP won 12.6% of the vote and
only managed to get one MP into parliament. That is I out of 629 MPs.
The Green Party got 3.8% of the vote and also got one MP.

Under a proportional voting system UKIP would become the third biggest
party in government with 82 seats and the Green Party would have won
24.

Unsurprisingly the two major parties don't want to change the system.
