Especially if we understood the mechanisms some of us might be able to
override them.

But the prehistoric, historic, and present-day events indicate we
seldom, if ever, do so.

My interest is in making the world a better place.  Without
understanding what lies behind large-scale social behavior, we are
likely to make decisions leading to a lot more misery.
